Did you know the history and heritage of Sierra Leonean “Krios” in London is uniquely linked to Britain? Come listen to Krio voices and how their history and heritage is also linked to traditional architecture known as ‘Bod Os’ (wooden house).
The ‘Krios’ are descendants of previously enslaved and free peoples from Africa, the Caribbean and America who British abolitionists resettled in Sierra Leone from 1787. Some of these returnees were also from London. On arrival in Sierra Leone they named their settlement ‘Free Town’ and built unique wooden houses.
Come and hear how architecture plays an interesting part in community life. The Bod Os, an important part of Krio heritage is facing extinction. See how one such house was recently restored with the help of British architects, conservationists and architectural students. Architecture can be an important part of one’s heritage and whenever possible let’s conserve it!
